Anxiety

Anxiety is something every human experiences. It is a natural, protective mechanism, a "survival alarm" designed to keep us alert to potential threats. However, when this alarm system becomes hypersensitive or stuck in the "on" position, it can move from being a helpful signal to something that feels overwhelming, persistent, and restrictive.

At its core, anxiety is an anticipatory state. While fear is a response to an immediate, present threat, anxiety is our mind’s attempt to prepare for what might happen in the future. It is a complex physiological and psychological state involving a surge of hormones like adrenaline and cortisol, designed to prepare the body for a fight, flight, or freeze response.

What Does Anxiety Look Like?

Anxiety wears many faces, and it looks different for everyone. It is rarely just one feeling; it often presents as a combination of:

  • Physical Sensations: A racing heart, shallow breathing, muscle tension, "butterflies" in the stomach, or persistent fatigue.

  • Cognitive Patterns: Persistent worrying, difficulty concentrating, racing thoughts, or a tendency to focus on "what if" or "worse case" scenarios.

  • Behavioural Changes: Avoiding certain situations that might trigger discomfort, difficulty sleeping, or feeling a need to be constantly busy to distract from internal unease.

For some, it manifests as sudden, intense spikes; for others, it is a low-level, constant hum of tension that makes daily life feel unnecessarily heavy.

Who Might Benefit from Counselling?

You might consider seeking support if anxiety has begun to limit your world or interfere with the things you value. Counselling can be particularly beneficial if:

  • You feel "stuck": You find yourself avoiding new experiences, relationships, or career opportunities.

  • Your physical health is becoming impacted: You are noticing that your body is holding onto stress in ways that affect your body, day to day life, sleep, digestion, or energy levels.

  • You want to understand your triggers: You feel like your "alarm system" is going off, but you aren't sure why, or you want to map out the specific patterns in your life that lead to overwhelm.

  • You desire a non-masking space: You are looking for a safe, non-judgmental environment to explore these feelings without the pressure to present a composed version of yourself.

"You do not have to carry this weight alone. Anxiety often thrives in isolation, but by bringing it into a supportive space, we can begin to turn down the volume of the alarm. We can work together to help you understand your nervous system’s unique language, helping you regain your sense of autonomy and move toward a life where you are back in the driver’s seat."
