What is self esteem?

We all have that internal voice, the one that narrates our day, tells us how we’re doing, and keeps track of our worth. Some days, that voice is supportive. Other days, it can feel like your harshest critic. That’s what we mean by "self-esteem." It isn’t about being perfect or feeling bulletproof; it’s simply about how you value yourself and the kind of relationship you have with your own identity.

What Does Low Self-Esteem Actually Feel Like?
Â
It’s rarely as simple as just "feeling bad about yourself." Often, low self-esteem shows up in ways we don't even realize are related to how we view our worth:
Â
-
The Inner Critic: A harsh, relentless internal voice that focuses on flaws, magnifying mistakes and minimizing achievements.
 -
Difficulty Setting Boundaries: Feeling that your needs are secondary, leading to a pattern of people-pleasing or difficulty saying "no" for fear of rejection.
 -
Perfectionism: A paralyzing need to get everything right, often driven by the belief that you are only as good as your last accomplishment.
 -
The "Imposter" Feeling: A nagging sense that others will eventually discover you are not as capable or worthy as they think you are.
 -
Social Withdrawal: Avoiding opportunities or connections because of a fear of judgment or the belief that you don’t "fit in."
Who Might Benefit from Counselling?
Â
You don’t need to be in a crisis to benefit from exploring this. If you feel like your inner world is holding you back from living the life you actually want, that is a perfectly good reason to start a conversation.
People often find it helpful to look at self-esteem in therapy when:
Â
-
You’re tired of the constant cycle of self-criticism and are ready to learn how to be kinder to yourself.
 -
You notice you’re constantly looking for external validation just to feel "okay."
 -
You’re going through a big life change or exploring your identity and feeling a bit lost in the process.
 -
You want to get better at setting boundaries and feeling comfortable taking up space in your own life.
